Why Pay MORE for Synthetic Oil?

Why Pay MORE for Synthetic Oil?

I know soon you’ll agree, it’s a common misconception that: Full Synthetic oil is only needed for a specific group of cars OR that once you use Full Synthetic oil “you can’t ever go back” AND that it’s too expensive. Fortunately for us, none of these are the case. In fact, using Full Synthetic Engine oil will save you money!

Full Synthetic engine oil is best in its class because it offers premium internal engine protection with cleaner burning energy. Studies also show that using Full Synthetic engine oil can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy by 4.5% (Roy, 2009). Considering that most Maryland drivers on the road today travel an average of 13,500 miles per year (Average miles driven per year by Americans, 2021), that 4.5% savings could add up quickly. And that’s just one benefit of Full Synthetic engine oil!

At the time of writing this article, the current average cost of gasoline in the state of Maryland is $3.48. In addition, the current average MPG of vehicle’s driven on the road today is 24.2mpg. Now, stay with me here, because hopefully the talk of saving money isn’t boring, but let’s do some quick math to see how this all ads up. Like my teachers always told me, show your work.

First, let’s label a few things that won’t change in our equation. A 4.5% increase of fuel economy in a vehicle that offers an average of 24.2mpg is the equivalent of an additional 1.08mpg. Not much, but we will soon see how that adds up. Next, for engine oil pricing we will follow J.J.’s Auto Service Center’s 5 Quart pricing plan. With our Conventional Engine Oil change starting at $44.95 and Full Synthetic Engine Oil change starting at $68.99. With that out of the way, let’s compare the cost of using each!

Conventional Engine Oil

Full Synthetic Engine Oil

  • Required to be changed every 3,000mi

Driving 13,500mi with an average of 24.2mpg, Gasoline used will equal 557.85gals. That’s a total cost of $1,944.66

Driving 13,500 miles will require 5 oil changes.

That’s a total investment of $224.75

  • Required to be changed every 5,000mi

Driving 13,500mi with an average of 25.28mpg, Gasoline used will equal 534.01gals. That’s a total cost of $1,861.55

Driving 13,500 miles will require 3 oil changes.

That’s a total investment of $206.97

Given the facts above, it’s no question that using Full Synthetic Engine Oil will save you money. That’s a total of $100.89/yr savings, on average!!
How much do you drive?

It truly doesn’t matter if your vehicle is a 1922 or a 2022, if synthetic oil is an available option, take it. To further support this reason, lets look at the internals of your engine to see how they can benefit from the use of Full Synthetic engine oil.

We can take for granted that each time we start our car, the engine roars to life with ease. Never do we fully consider all the internal components that constantly touch and rub up against one another. Full synthetic engine oil offers protection in temperatures high and low so those components endure less friction from their neighbors. It just lubricates where other oils can’t.

Using full synthetic engine oil in your engines also gives the internals less strain each time it starts up. Not to mention, you also don’t have to worry about switching from different weights of engine oil, depending on the temperature outside, like the old days.

To summarize, full synthetic engine oil does a lot for you. It’s the only engine oil that works for you, instead of the other way around.

  • Greater internal engine protection
  • Cleaning burning energy
  • Better performance in all around temperatures
  • Increases fuel economy
  • Extended distance between oil change intervals

And, to top it all off, you’re not stuck with it for life. If at any point you decide full synthetic engine oil just isn’t for you, or if you’ve used conventional oil your entire life and just want to try synthetic once, do it. It won’t hurt a thing, you’ve got nothing to lose but hopefully everything to gain.

Thank you for taking the time to read this article, I hope it’s been helpful. If you’d like more information or to schedule an oil change at J.J’s Auto Service Center, give us a call at 301-374-8995.
