The drivetrain is everything between the transmission and the wheels, and when part of it wears the symptoms are usually easy to recognise once you know what you are listening for. A click that follows the wheel around a turn, a vibration that builds with speed, a grease-splattered inner fender, or a whine from under the car are all drivetrain complaints, and each points somewhere different.

CV axles: the click on a turn

Front CV axles are the drivetrain component we replace most often. The rubber boot that holds grease around the joint splits with age, grease flings out, dirt and water get in, and the joint wears. The classic symptom is a rhythmic clicking on full lock — sharper turning out of a parking space, quieter going straight. The earlier sign is grease sprayed around the inside of the wheel arch, which is visible long before the noise starts.

Caught while it is only a torn boot, the job is small. Left until the joint is worn, the axle is replaced. Either way it is a job we do constantly and one we can usually confirm on a quick inspection.

Differentials and transfer cases

Differential and transfer case fluid does a hard job in a sealed box that most owners never think about, and it is one of the most commonly skipped services on a maintenance schedule. On four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles — which are a large share of what we see in Charles County — that fluid is also protecting some of the most expensive components on the vehicle.

We perform front and rear differential services and transfer case services, and we replace differential assemblies where wear has already gone too far. A whine that changes with speed but not with engine revs, or a howl on deceleration, is the usual warning.

Driveshafts, axle seals and mounts

Driveshaft flex joints and carrier bearings — a vibration that comes in at a particular speed and disappears above it, or a shudder as the vehicle pulls away.
Axle seals — a leak at the point the axle enters the differential or transmission, often mistaken for an engine oil leak.
Four-wheel-drive engagement faults — a system that will not select, will not disengage, or leaves a warning light on the dash.

Diagnosing a vibration properly

Vibrations are one of the most misdiagnosed complaints in this trade, because tires, brakes, suspension and drivetrain can all produce something similar. We establish whether it changes with road speed, engine speed or braking before recommending anything, because that single distinction rules out most of the possibilities immediately.
