Automatic transmission fluid does not just lubricate, it operates the transmission — the clutches and valves inside are all worked hydraulically by it. As it ages it loses its friction properties and picks up material from the clutches themselves, and shifting quality goes with it. A full fluid exchange service is by a wide margin the most common transmission job we perform, and it is a fraction of the cost of what it prevents.
We use a proper exchange service rather than a drain-and-fill, which leaves most of the old fluid in the torque converter and cooler. We also service CVT transmissions with the correct fluid for that type, which is not interchangeable with conventional ATF.
Diagnosing a shifting complaint
Not every shifting problem is the transmission. Engine misfires, faulty sensors and control module faults all produce symptoms that feel like a failing gearbox, and replacing a transmission that was never the problem is an expensive mistake. We road test the vehicle, scan for stored and pending codes, review live transmission data, and where the fault is electronic rather than mechanical we can perform transmission control module programming.
