We find oil leaks with dye, not guesswork
An engine that has been leaking for a while is coated in oil, and oil spreads. A leak at the top of the engine will show up at the bottom, which is why leaks get misdiagnosed and why owners end up paying for the wrong gasket. Our approach is to clean the engine bay first, add a UV tracer dye to the oil, and return the car to you to drive normally. When it comes back, the dye shows under ultraviolet light exactly where the oil is escaping from — not where it has run to.
It is one of the most frequent procedures we perform, and it is the difference between replacing the gasket that is actually leaking and replacing three that are not.
The leaks we find most
- Valve cover gaskets — the most common by a distance. Often smelled before it is seen, because the oil drips onto the exhaust.
- Oil pan gaskets — a slow drip that leaves a spot on the driveway overnight.
- Rear main and timing cover seals — bigger jobs, and exactly why the dye test matters before committing to one.
Tune-ups, misfires and rough running
A misfire, a rough idle or a loss of power usually comes back to ignition. We replace spark plugs and ignition coils as a proper tune-up rather than a parts swap, and where a cylinder is misfiring we confirm which one and why before anything is replaced. On many engines the plugs sit under the intake or the coil packs, so doing the job once and correctly matters more than the price of the parts.
When an engine needs replacing
Sometimes the honest answer is that the engine is finished. We do complete engine replacements, and we will tell you plainly when the repair costs more than the car is worth — and when a used or remanufactured unit is the sensible option instead of a new one. That conversation happens before the work starts, with the numbers in front of you.
